So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. (Mark 15:31, ESV).
They just didn’t get it. The reason people hated Jesus so much was because He didn’t think like them.
Why would this man who claimed to be God do nothing to save Himself?
“If it were me,” they would say, “I’d save myself.”
But that’s the point, isn’t it? Jesus didn’t come to this world to save Himself, He came to save us. And the only way to do that was to stay on the cross.
All through His ministry Jesus taught that the greatest people in God’s kingdom are those who live unselfish lives. The ones who keep nothing for themselves will earn the greater reward in heaven. And Jesus lived what He preached.
Because Jesus died on the cross, we can go to heaven when we die if we accept Him as our Savior. In Him, we also find the pattern for living our lives. Jesus, though He was in fact God, never claimed anything for Himself. He lived a life completely dedicated to loving and serving God and others.
On the cross, Jesus gave the greatest demonstration of what He taught. His love for God, and for you, kept Him there.
